Roy gained his basic training and experience with professional and contracting firms in London and South Africa.

In 1976 he became director in charge of the Pietermaritzburg office. In 1977 he transferred to the Bloemfontein office and in 1981 to Johannesburg handling a variety of projects of a commercial and engineering nature. In 1987 he moved to Durban and managed the KwaZulu Natal offices for many years.

He has extensive experience in all aspects of quantity surveying and construction cost management and contractual matters.
