£40m City Park Regeneration

February, 2009

We were appointment last month as project and cost managers on Irwell City Park, one of the most important regeneration projects in Greater Manchester.

Following two separate bid processes the firm has been commissioned for both Project and Cost Management service lines on the £40 million project, designed by Broadway Malyan with specialist bridge design by FoRM Associates.  The project team will now begin the work of detailed design and technical assessments for the section of the project which connects MediaCityUK and the Quays to Greengate and Victoria Street in the regional centre.

Irwell City Park (ICP) is critical to raising the international economic competitiveness of the Manchester City Region and is being led by a Greater Manchester collaboration involving Salford and Manchester City Councils, Trafford MBC, Central Salford URC and key developers.

The aim is to fully realise the potential of the River Irwell and Manchester Ship Canal through the creation of a new and exciting continuous access route at the heart of the Manchester City Region – between The Quays and the Regional Centre.

The objectives of the ICP are:

  • To optimise conditions for additional private sector investment;
  • To improve access to jobs and major employment sites;
  • Create new sustainable transport links;
  • Increase the number and quality of job opportunities;
  • Create synergy and substantially improve the impact of regeneration masterplans;
  • Maximise benefits from the agglomeration of economic and development value; and
  • Create an internationally recognised waterfront destination.

Within Davis Langdon, the project team is led by Paul Donlan and John Barclay from the firm’s Transport and Infrastructure specialist group.  Davis Langdon Specialist Services will provide advice on Facilities Management Consulting, as well as Value Planning and Risk.

Paul Donlan, a Partner at Davis Langdon said, “This is a key project of regional, if not national, significance and we are absolutely delighted to have secured such an exciting commission. It will be a great opportunity to work with the three local authorities, Central Salford URC and leading landowners and developers along this eight kilometre stretch of the Irwell - which is right on our doorstep in Manchester and Salford.”
