Sabre Charity Day

October, 2008

Birmingham residents were invited to spend a penny on Friday, 17th October… but it was all in a good cause!

Our Birmingham office – along with our charity of the year the Sabre Charitable Trust - held a fund raising day in Victoria Square which helped in our efforts to raise £10,000 to send two vehicles filled with much needed resources such as toys, arts and crafts, books and sports equipment to Ghana.

As part of the day’s activities, people were asked to come down with their spare change in an attempt to fill a Ghanaian Drum with fifty kilos of coins.  Visitors to Victoria Square were also able to enjoy a performance by Ghanaian band One Drum; traditional Ghanaian dancing and hair braiding, whilst later in the day Partners from the firm were confined to the stocks!

Towards the end of the day all the donated items were packed and loaded into the two vehicles which will then transport all the donated resources to Ghana.

“The fund raising day has been adopted as part of our Birmingham office staff day and was the culmination of an ‘Apprentice’ style challenge we set our staff over the last month in which we asked them to source enough items from local businesses, schools, churches and sports clubs to fill two vehicles,” comments Davis Langdon Birmingham Partner Tim Austin.

“Much like the popular TV programme we asked them to maximise their return, starting with nothing other than their charm and innovation and staff competed throughout the morning to collect the most items from local supporters.”

Sabre Development Director Dominic Bond added:  “The donated resources will make a significant difference to our partner schools in Ghana, where the lack of basic teaching and learning resources is one of the biggest barriers to quality education in rural communities.  So far we have had a fantastic response for the staff at Davis Langdon.”

The vehicles transporting the resources begin their 6,000 mile journey the following Thursday, and during their four week expedition will pass through Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Mali and Burkina Faso, before arriving on Ghana’s southern coast on 20 November.  For more information about participating in these charity overland expeditions please see www.busrun.org.

The Sabre Charitable Trust is a UK registered charity working at minimal cost to help schools and other institutions in Ghana, West Africa with infrastructure improvements, resource supplies and staff training programmes. In addition to schools, Sabre also provides support to the health and conservation sectors.
